Verus has expertise in several different areas:
- Metrology
- Mechanical design
- Toolmaking
- Plastics injection moulding
- Quality management
This expertise enables Verus to offer a unique and highly specialised range of services. Those services include:
- Bespoke dimensional metrology jigs and fixture design, manufacture, installation, and support
- Supply of proprietary modular metrology fixture kits
- Sub-contract metrology
- Moldflow analysis
- Dimensional metrology and calibration
The company’s headquarters is in Sligo in the Northwest of Ireland. It also has a metrology lab and office in Nottingham in the UK. Verus services clients from around the world.
The Start of the Verus Journey
Verus was founded as Verus Precision in 2008 by Andrew Hodson and Michael Nugent. Andrew is a certified moldflow analyst and toolmaker with significant expertise in injection moulding. He is currently the Managing Director at Verus.
Michael is now the Technical Director at Verus. He is a qualified toolmaker with over 20 years of experience in the plastics industry. He also has specific, industry-leading expertise in metrology.
Back in the launch phase of the company, its focus was on providing metrology and related services.
Andrew said: “Up until the launch of Verus Precision, manufacturers in Ireland had to do metrology internally. We gave them an alternative as we were the first independent metrology house in the country.”
The level of metrology expertise in the business was – and remains so to this day – world-class. Clients from across Ireland, particularly those in the MedTech sector, began using Verus whenever they needed metrology services.
Growing and Evolving
While the expertise Verus offered and the quality of the service it provided was second to none, it was humble beginnings for the company as both Andrew and Michael initially worked from a hot desk in a coworking space. It wasn’t long, however, before the company grew to the point it needed its first building – that happened in 2010.
Verus then expanded further with the opening of its UK office in 2015. It now has three engineers and a full-scale metrology lab in this office.
While metrology services were essential to Verus when it first launched, over the years the nature of business evolved. One of the key evolutions was its move into a unique and developing space – the design and manufacture of metrology jigs and fixtures.
Dimensional Metrology Jigs and Fixtures – A Unique Offering
The move into designing and manufacturing dimensional metrology jigs and fixtures did not come out of the blue. In fact, this part of the business has its foundations in the sub-contract metrology work that Verus provided to clients.
Andrew explained: “We wanted to make the measuring process more efficient and provide a better service to our clients. This led to us developing and manufacturing a jig in-house that could measure 16 components or items at a time.
“This was ground-breaking territory not only for us, but for the manufacturing industry in general. The efficiency savings created by a fixture that can measure multiple components is substantial.”
The success of this in-house jig led Verus to begin designing and manufacturing metrology fixtures for clients around the world. Metrology fixture design and manufacturing is now the largest part of its business.
The Unique Selling Point of Verus
The unique selling point that makes Verus stand out from competitors is the internal expertise in the company.
“We have the in-house expertise required to gauge R&R any fixture we design,” said Andrew. “We can also provide clients with a full metrology report on that fixture.
“This level of validation in fixture design and manufacturing is unparalleled in the industry.”
The success of the business and its metrology fixture offering resulted in Verus moving to a larger building. Its new location in Sligo gives the company enhanced in-house precision manufacturing capabilities. Verus completed this move earlier in 2018.
Verus also changed its name to Verus Metrology Partners. The name change is a better reflection of the work that Verus now specialises in, i.e. providing bespoke solutions to high-volume manufacturing companies, particularly those in regulated sectors like medical device manufacturing.
The Future
One of the things that make Verus Metrology Partners stand out from companies in a similar space is its focus on innovation.
This innovation includes adding automation to its metrology fixtures, something which can, in particular situations, speed up the measurement process even further.
Verus is also working towards providing measurement, inspection, and validation services at client sites. This is especially beneficial to clients that don’t have properly equipped or resourced metrology departments.
“We have essential core skills and competencies in-house as well as an unwavering focus on delivering the highest quality of service possible to our clients,” said Andrew. “Maintaining that requires innovation, so we are proud to be at the forefront of our industry.”
