The MedTech sector has a long history in the North West. The multinational medical device manufacturer Abbott, for example, first moved into Sligo in 1974. Over the years and decades since, it has expanded, and other major multinationals have moved in, not only in Sligo, but also in the surrounding areas including Donegal and the northern parts of County Mayo.
In addition, indigenous Irish companies have launched in the North West and become successful.
The future of the MedTech sector in the North West looks bright too, not least because of the major investment announcements that have been made over the past 6-12 months. Most of those investments involve expanding capacity which means more jobs for the region.
Opportunities that Exist
Over the years, the North West of Ireland has developed a MedTech ecosystem that includes both medical device manufacturers as well as specialist companies providing support services.
Many of those companies providing support services work exclusively in the MedTech industry with clients in the North West and across the country. Some work in both the medical device manufacturing and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries.
This MedTech ecosystem means there are multiple opportunities available in the North West in a range of companies. In other words, if something doesn’t work out in one company, similar opportunities will exist in other companies in the region.
In addition, there are opportunities in other industries in the North West which might suit your skillset. This particularly applies to engineers and software developers.
Benefits of the North West
So, there are opportunities in the MedTech industry in Sligo and other parts of the North West, while the industry is robust, well established, growing, and has a strong MedTech ecosystem.
Why the North West of Ireland, however? Why not Galway in the West of Ireland which also has a strong MedTech industry? MedTech is also strong in Cork, Dublin, and Limerick. Why the North West?
The North West of Ireland offers a range of benefits over other regions in the country where the MedTech industry is also strong. Those benefits include:
